Why Sustainable Roofing for 2025

2024 was officially earth’s warmest year on record, with global temperatures surpassing 1.5°C (2.7° F) above pre-industrial levels. This underscores the climate crisis as one of today’s most urgent and defining challenges, requiring collective, global action to address its far-reaching consequences. As a result of escalating temperatures, increasingly frequent heatwaves and rising energy demands, humanity continues to be pushed to the brink. According to the United Nations, by 2050 over 1.2 billion people could face life-threatening heat conditions.

While governments and multilateral institutions work towards developing climate action plans at both the national and international levels, innovative solutions such as sustainable roofing offer tangible ways to mitigate the palpable impacts of extreme heat and reduce energy consumption and the overall emission of greenhouse gases. Reimagining how roofs are designed can help cool communities, including urban cities and densely populated communities, that are vulnerable to the urban heat island effect, and lower energy usage. Strategically designed to reflect sunlight and absorb less heat, sustainable roofing not only lowers indoor temperatures but also cuts electricity costs and reduces greenhouse gas emissions in the process.

Worker using Topps coating on a concrete roof

Topps Products offers a variety of cost-effective cool roof coatings that not only preserve the overall integrity and durability of a roof, but also ensures that it is more energy efficient. The coatings, which can tolerate climates and temperatures of -40° to 140°Fahrenheit, are both time-tested and climate-proven.

Investing in climate-resilient infrastructure, such as sustainable roofing, presents a unique opportunity to simultaneously address myriad challenges, from mitigating heat, to lowering carbon emissions and reducing energy consumption. By taking proactive steps, such as the aforementioned, we can all play our part in combatting the climate crisis – one roof at a time.
